Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth. Often, however, there is not enough space in the jaw, resulting in them remaining impacted (partially or fully “buried”) within the bone or gums.
The incomplete eruption of wisdom teeth can cause a series of problems, such as:
- Pain and Swelling: Due to inflammation of the gums around the tooth (pericoronitis).
- Decay (Cavities): Partial coverage makes cleaning difficult, leading to decay in the wisdom tooth itself or to the adjacent tooth.
- Pressure and Movement: Pressure on neighboring teeth causing esthetic problems.
- Cysts: Rarely, the formation of cysts take place around the impacted wisdom tooth.
The surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth is a common and safe procedure, which is performed in our clinic under local anesthesia.
- Preparation: Detailed radiographic examination (panoramic or/and computed tomography-CBCT) is performed to accurately determine the tooth’s position and its relationship with important anatomical structures.
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to ensure the procedure is completely painless.
- Procedure: The dentist, using specialized tools and techniques, removes the impacted wisdom tooth with the least possible intervention.
- Instructions: Afterwards, instructions are given for post-operative care (diet, hygiene, medication), ensuring a quick and smooth recovery.
